Does Wales have its own department ? -- Beardo 16:25, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is a Minister for Environment, Planning and Countryside[>] who I assume is head of a Department for Environment, Planning and Countryside. See here .  Keithology  "Talk"  16:42, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Any more?

[edit]

I have added those Department of the Environment pages that I can find - please add those missing! TerriersFan 21:20, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge discussion

[edit]

Is this a good idea? They are essentially the same government department type with a different name. Just like 'ministry for' and 'ministry of' are the same. -- Patchy1 01:37, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Merge into List of environment ministries and further develop. See the List of agriculture ministries for a well done, somewhat related list. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 10:38, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note: among related lists are List of ministers of the environment and List of ministers of climate change. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 10:48, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And see also: Category:Environment ministries. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 13:46, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article name and further merge possibilities

[edit]

Clearly now a list, this article should be renamed to one of the following:

... or something like that. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 01:32, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. I think that the lede can be expanded to state, with examples, common tasks carried out by departments or ministries with this portfolio, and to flag the existence of outliers and combinations (for example, if a country has a Department of Energy and the Environment). In short, I think this should be an article that happens to incorporate a list. bd2412 T 02:50, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. The reverse logic also can apply: arguably the best lists are not simply lists, but add value both as an overview and for each entry. In my view, the optimal format for this article would be to merge it further, with List of ministers of the environment and List of ministers of climate change, into a table such as in List of agriculture ministries. Other thoughts/ views? Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 13:51, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Additional candidates for further merging into this page:

... both disambiguation pages. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 14:45, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And another:

Regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 17:59, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think the List of agriculture ministries is an excellent template, and would completely agree with following it. I'm not as sanguine about merging in List of ministers of the environment, since that is really a list of people rather than offices, and would quickly bloat the page pretty massively. bd2412 T 23:22, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Taking another look, I agree that it would be too much to merge in the List of ministers of the environment. Looking further at current article naming conventions, I think the best names for this article would be one of the following:
In many countries, "Department" is a subnational administrative unit rather than an agency. By naming it "List of ... ministries", it would keep the primary focus on the national level, which I think is most useful and appropriate. This does not preclude adding state/provincial level agencies, as has been done in the List of agriculture ministries. By naming it "environmental" rather than "environment", it would open it up a bit more to include also related ministries (e.g. ministries of climate change). Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 11:41, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. In the course of doing so, I've noted that there are many subnational environmental agencies. My recommendation is that this article focus primarily on national environmental agencies (ministries, departments), while separate national-level lists be created as would be useful, such as List of environmental agencies in the United States. New merge discussion

[edit]

Some background may be helpful...

  • Recent history. Recent merge/ move history looks something like this:
<Environment ministry> merged with => <Department of the Environment>
<Department of the Environment> moved to => <List of environmental ministries>
  • Current direction. Suggested aim is to develop it into a comprehensive, value-added list-article focusing primarily on national-level agencies, such as List of agriculture ministries.
  • Scope. A key question in the current proposed merges may be how best to define the scope/ boundaries of this article. Environmental agencies cover a wide domain, and come under a variety of names, varying by country, and over time. My suggestion for this article is to remain focused primarily at the national level, to provide a comprehensive overview of primary environmental ministries for each country.
  • Role of disambiguation pages. Another key question in the current proposed merges is the continued value of concerned disambiguation pages. Arguably, they retain value as disambiguation pages, however main content should be focused in one or more comprehensive article(s), e.g. one at the global level, by country; additional articles at the national level, including country subdivision agencies. (As a reference here, see also Category:Environmental agency disambiguation pages.)
  • Redirects. Redirects from current disambiguation page article names, if that is changed, should go to the most appropriate (commonly referenced) comprehensive article. For some of the current disambiguation pages, that would be a country-level article, not this one.

So my own, somewhat nuanced position on the proposed merge at this time...

  1. Maintain and develop <List of environmental ministries> as the primary, comprehensive article on national environmental agencies, merging in especially national-level content from relevant disambiguation pages
  2. Maintain the disambiguation pages, except Ministry of Natural Resources; I think the others continue to serve a useful function as such.
  3. Where the disambiguation page contains primarily country subdivision linked articles, if those articles are primarily or exclusively for one country (Foo), better to redirect the plain version of the article title, if that is done, to "List of environmental agencies in Foo".
  4. The article, Ministry of Natural Resources, can, I think be merged with this one.

Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 02:48, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would prefer to move all of the disambiguation pages to "Foo (disambiguation)" titles and redirect the primary topic titles here. The disambig pages are as likely to be confusing as helpful, especially if the term is linked with respect to a country that does not have a corresponding article for its department. bd2412 T 02:59, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that adding "(disambiguation)" to the relevant disambiguation page titles would clarify their function. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 03:41, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
One problem that I see in full merge of the noted disambiguation pages is that most of those pages include links to articles on country subdivision environmental agencies. That should be beyond the scope of this article, in my view. For disambiguation pages (primarily or exclusively) related to subnational environmental agencies in the United States, for example, better for redirects of the current article titles to go to List of environmental agencies in the United States. The next problem is that some of the disambiguation pages currently include links to relevant articles -- still at the country subdivision level -- for multiple countries. The latter is one reason why I believe they continue to have a positive function, and should not be merged with this article, except for primarily national-level environmental agencies. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 03:52, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The one article that I think can be merged successfully with this one is <Ministry of Natural Resources>. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 04:21, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We already have several state and provincial agencies listed here because they happen to be called departments or ministries. Since the U.S. has its own list, what is basically left are the subdivision agencies of Australia and Canada, and there aren't that many. I see no reason to avoid listing the rest of the Australian and Canadian versions. In fact, since Department of Environmental Management and Department of Environmental Protection list only U.S. entities (except for one former Australian entity) both can redirect to the U.S. list. bd2412 T 13:11, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it would be appropriate to add the Departments of Natural Resources of subdivisions of Australia and Canada to this article (though the 3 or 4 entries are all redlinks); while the Departments of Natural Resources of subdivisions of the United States can be merged with List of environmental agencies in the United States, if not already there. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 18:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All done. Cheers! bd2412 T 13:08, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More environmental contacts

[edit]

Hello All!

I have found some more contacts for different environmental ministries or government bodies throughout the world. Unfortunately I am not an experienced Wiki editor to create pages, and also I do not have too much time. I hope someone can help to create links and add these coutries direct site links to the list.

By the way, almost all countries have FB page for their ministries, so if homepage is not working ar cannot be found, you can use that. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tico77 (talkcontribs) 15:33, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
